A Patch from Scratch by Megan Forward

Where to buy: MacLeans on Beaumont St, online at booktopia

This beautiful book follows a young family as they establish a sustainable garden in their yard even though they live in the suburbs – “my family wants to live more like people on a farm”.  The story takes the reader through the process of planning the garden, building the chicken coop, buying seeds, planting, caring for crops and harvesting. The family also explores natural solutions to pests. For budding gardeners, this book is perfect. The reader is taken through the process step by step in an engaging story format. At the end, there is a diagram that explanations how the elements of the garden work together, such as using food scraps to feed the chooks and using chook poo to fertilise.

This book introduces concepts of sustainability to younger kids and will inspire families on how they can create a sustainable garden in a small space.

As a gift, perhaps put seeds, tools and gardening gloves together with the book!
